Remote Sensing for Detection of Urban Disasters

Airborne and satellite remote sensing is a powerful approach to capture the areas affected by large scale urban disasters in a short time. Various remote sensing techniques, e.g., high-resolution optical satellites(QuickBird, IKONOS), earth observation optical satellites (Landsat, ASTER), SAR satellites (ERS/SAR, RADARSAT), airborne video images, are employed for various disasters worldwide: the 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey, earthquake, the 2001 Bhuj, India, earthquake, the 2003 Boumerdes, Algeria earthquake, and the 2003 Bam, Iran, earthquake. Automated damage detection methods for buildings are being developed using these images.
